Festas de Mouros e Cristãos. Culturas Festivas Ressignificadas
Keywords:
Moors and Christians festivals; traditional festivities; festive culture; intangible cultural heritageSynopsis
This work aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the contemporary processes that re-signify the Moors and Christians festivals. Such an endeavour involves highlighting the dynamic relationship between the festivals and the world, by exploring their centuries-old histories, the social and political instrumentalisation of festive culture, strategies of valorisation — including their development as tourist attractions and their classification as intangible cultural heritage — forms of community appropriation and the constructions of otherness that emerge during their reconfiguration and reproduction.
It also seeks to enrich the scholarly literature on Moors and Christians festivals within the Ibero-American context. In conclusion, through a critical-analytical framework, this volume presents an interdisciplinary examination of the Moors and Christians celebrations, synthesising insights from scholars across a range of disciplines, cultural contexts and sociopolitical settings.
